Family In Town? Here's How to Book a Bolton Companion When the House Is Full

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes with hosting relatives. Not the bad kind — you might even like them — but the kind where you haven't had a moment to yourself since they rolled off the M62 on Tuesday. Your kettle's on constant rotation, the telly's stuck on some programme nobody's watching, and your diary has somehow filled itself with trips to B&Q and a 'nice pub lunch' you didn't choose.

If you'd been meaning to book some company in Bolton before the invasion, you might assume it's off the table until they've gone. It isn't. You just need to be smarter about it.

Think Daytime, Not Evening

The obvious mistake is trying to squeeze a booking into the evening, when the house is at full capacity and everyone's wondering where you've nipped off to. Evenings are the worst possible window. Everyone's present, everyone's bored, and someone always asks a question the second you stand up.

Daytime is your friend. Say the relatives fancy a wander around the town centre and the markets — brilliant, you've all had a morning together. Then you mention popping out for an hour to sort something personal. Nobody questions it. People expect it. A companion booking at midday or early afternoon takes about the same time as a haircut and attracts far less suspicion than a mysterious 'quick errand' at 9pm.

Plenty of Bolton companions offer daytime slots, and midweek availability is generally better too — which matters when your guests are here until Sunday.

Move the Meeting Out of Your Patch

Even if you're booking an outcall somewhere neutral, you don't want to bump into your mum's cousin outside the hotel. Bolton's compact, but it's not that compact.

Look at the edges of town. A quiet café near Lostock or a pub out towards Bromley Cross does the job nicely. Somewhere you can sit, chat, have a drink, and leave without crossing paths with anyone who knows your face. If you're meeting at a hotel, the ones out by the M61 junction or on the fringes near the Middlebrook area are far enough from the centre that you'd have to be spectacularly unlucky to see a familiar face.

Keep the journey short, though. Half the appeal of a daytime booking is that it doesn't eat your whole day.

The Excuse Hierarchy

Let's be honest about the cover stories, ranked from worst to best:

Worst: "Just popping out." Too vague. Vague invites questions.

Mid: "Need to pick something up." Fine, but if you return empty-handed, you're in trouble.

Better: "Haircut / dentist / phone shop." Solid, boring, unimpeachable. Nobody has ever followed up on a dental appointment.

Best: "Half-day at the match." If Bolton Wanderers are playing — and there's almost always a fixture somewhere in the calendar — you have a legitimate, time-stamped, socially bulletproof alibi. Football fans are expected to disappear for hours and return either elated or miserable. Either mood works. Nobody checks the result, and even if they do, you claim you left early because we were rubbish.

The beauty of the match excuse is its flexibility. It explains a late morning departure, an early evening return, and any mood in between.

A Few Practical Pointers

Book ahead. Spontaneity is a luxury for people with empty houses. Get your slot locked in before the week starts so you're not scrambling.

Keep your phone quiet. Nothing screams 'suspicious activity' like a man repeatedly checking his phone while a relative talks at him about a garden fence. Silence the group chat.

Don't over-explain. The moment you start justifying your whereabouts unprompted, you've lost. People who say "I'll only be an hour, I'm just going to the shop, I might get a haircut too" are advertising. Say where you're going, go, come back.

Mind the aftermath. Come back in the same mood you left, roughly. If you left grumpy and return humming, someone will comment.

It's Your Week Too

Here's the thing that gets forgotten in all the hosting chaos: relatives visiting doesn't suspend your life. You're allowed ninety minutes to yourself. Booking company during a family visit isn't some elaborate heist — it's a diary management exercise, and Bolton gives you enough geography and enough daytime availability to pull it off without drama.

Get the timing right, pick your meeting spot sensibly, and lean on the football if you need to. Then go back and enjoy the rest of the week with your guests, quietly smug in the knowledge that you're the only one in the house whose week went exactly to plan.
